Pontiac Firebird: The Legend of the Screaming Chicken

Produced from 1967 to 2002, the Pontiac Firebird was more than just a cousin to the Camaro. It was a driver-focused machine defined by aggressive styling, cockpit-oriented interiors, and high-performance engineering. From the high-revving OHC-6 of the '60s to the legendary LS1 V8 of the late '90s, the Firebird remains the ultimate symbol of American muscle.

The Performance Trio

  • Trans Am: The pinnacle. Originally a 1969 handling package, it became a cultural icon known for its "Shaker" hoods and "Screaming Chicken" decals.

  • Formula: The "sleeper." It offered top-tier Trans Am V8 power in a lighter, more understated body—the enthusiast's choice for pure performance.

  • Firehawk: A limited-production beast modified by SLP, pushing horsepower and suspension tuning far beyond factory limits.

Firebirds in Film & TV

  • Smokey and the Bandit (1977): The car that saved the brand. A 1976 Trans Am (with a '77 front clip) became an outlaw legend.

  • Knight Rider (1982–1986): KITT was a modified 1982 Trans Am, turning the Firebird into a high-tech sci-fi star.

  • McQ (1974): John Wayne drove a Brewster Green 1973 SD-455, one of the rarest and most powerful Firebirds ever made.

  • Joe Dirt (2001): Joe rocks a 1979 Trans Am, though his "dream car" remains a '69 Charger Daytona.

  • The Hunter (1980): Steve McQueen traded his usual Porsche for a 1979 Trans Am in this classic bounty hunter flick.

The End of an Era

Production ended in 2002 with the yellow Collector Edition. While the Firebird left us then, the Pontiac brand continued until its official dissolution by GM in 2010.
